This crackle vase was hand carved for its outer surface effect. After the first firing, it was covered in a black slip, then the white crackle glaze. Inside, the vase was glazed in a food safe clear glaze, making this piece beautiful, and functional.
I wanted this form to feel architectural. The Inspiring thought behind it's creation is contrast.
Form - The shoulder of the vase splits the form into distinct sections, the ridges of the faceted lines changing direction at this point, highlighting one edge while casting a shadow on the same edge below it.
Surface - While technically both Glazed surfaces are opaque, the interior is a simple glossy finish that provides a darkness to the interior so deep its difficult to observe. The outer surface however, appears charcoal at first, covered entirely in layers of micro cracks, each one brightening the otherwise dark exterior.
